Color begets life exhibition Museum of Altamira Spain Hunter-gatherer rock art Lower Pecos canyons
Detail from the White Shaman Panel in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands of southwest Texas, remaining vivid some four thousand years after its creation by the Uto-Aztecan-speaking hunter-gatherer tribes who once peopled this borderlands region. The 26-foot-long cave painting is a sprawling limestone canvas of lunar goddesses, deer deities, fire-sun gods, peyote spirits, and cloud serpents, documenting the birth of the sun and the establishment of time.

The temporary exhibit Color Begets Life: Hunter-Gatherer Rock Art in the Lower Pecos Canyons features some of the most complex and impressive rock art displays in North America.

The hunter-gatherers that inhabited the Bajo Pecos region, in southwestern Texas (United States) and Coahuila (Mexico), began to make rock art from approximately 1700 BC. C until contact with Europeans.

With multicolored designs, the artists captured anthropomorphic figures accompanied by animals, geometric drawings and enigmatic figures. Schematized and ordered, the Rio Pecos style endows the images with meanings, infusing the characters with life through the form, color, materiality of the painting and its creation process. The result is visual stories that narrate the myths and rites of the societies that inhabited this region, such as the White Shaman mural, where the myth of the creation of the Huichols is represented.

The exhibition, funded by the Ministry of Culture, has been the result of collaboration between various members of the Rock Art Network, a working group created by the Getty Conservation Institute and the Bradshaw Foundation.
