Janette Deacon is a South African archaeologist specializing in heritage management and rock art conservation. She has been involved in archaeological research on the Later Stone Age and rock art in southern Africa since the early 1960s. Dr. Deacon holds a PhD in archaeology from the University of Cape Town. She has taught at the universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch, has been an honorary professor in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of South Africa since 2005, and is an honorary research associate of the Rock Art Research Institute (RARI) in Johannesburg. She was archaeologist and acting head of the Professional Division at the National Monuments Council from 1989 to 1999. Since retiring at the end of 1999, she has served on a number of heritage councils and committees. As coordinator of SARAP since 1998, she has organized workshops and courses designed to train employees at World Heritage Sites and national and provincial parks in the region to manage and conserve rock art. Since the Getty Conservation Institute launched its SARAP program in 2005, she has organized four workshops and three rock art tourist-guiding courses at the Mapungubwe and Cederberg World Heritage Sites.
